“In the fire-adapted ecosystems of the South, the issue is not whether an area will
burn but when it will burn and at what intensity.” — Andreu and Hermansen-Baez 2008, scientific journal on wildfires in the South
Fueled by an annual influx of approximately 1.5 million people, the South stands out as a region experiencing rapid growth. Paradoxically, this same area consistently grapples with the highest frequency of wildfires nationwide. As burgeoning populations drive housing developments deeper into the wildland-urban interface – the natural and forested zones where wildfires are most prevalent – an increasing number of lives and communities face heightened risk each year.
Consider Texas in 2006, where the majority of wildfires ignited within a mere two miles of a community.
