The Austin Police Department is investigating a homicide in east Austin that happened Thursday night. APD said on social media they received a call just before 10:00 pm near the 6300 block of Thurgood Avenue which is near Boggy Creek.
In a press briefing last night, APD said that upon arrival on the scene they discovered a male with a gunshot wound to the chest. Officers attempted live-saving measures on site but the victim succumbed to their injuries. Police did not detect any threat to the public.
They do have witnesses they are interviewing but gave no information on a possible suspect and were still working on identifying the victim.
This is Austin’s 40th homicide of 2024.

Power outages continued to plague parts of Austin again on Thursday. Nearly 5,600 customers in nine different areas of the city were impacted, including Southwest Parkway and Barton Creek Boulevard, an area between Bee Cave Parkway and the Colorado River, North Austin, Northeast Austin, Southwest Austin, Lost Creek, Metz Neighborhood Park and along Creeks Edge Parkway near Barton Creek.
The electric utility said the outages — like the Wednesday outages, which affected more than 7,000 customers — were “local” and not related to the statewide electric grid. The grid is operated by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas. — Austin American-Statesman
East Austin customers lost power for four hours from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Wednesday evening.
Austin Energy has 85 substations scattered throughout the Austin area.
In light of the recent outages, Austinites are being asked to conserve electricity.

The Mason Volunteer Fire Department and several other fire departments across the Hill Country were working to put out a wildfire in Mason County early this morning. The wildfire was located about seven miles east of Mason near the intersection of North Art Road and Highway 29.
Another blaze, the Pine Dump fire, is also burning across 10 acres in Bastrop County. The fire is currently 60% contained and the cause is unknown at this time. (KVUE-TV)

Thursday brought another day of record-breaking heat across the region. The high temperature at Camp Mabry reached 107 degrees, shattering a record set over 100 years ago.
Meteorologists say it’s all about the “heat dome”.
“This area of high pressure, sometimes referred to as a heat dome, is a slow moving, upper-level high pressure system of stable air and a deep layer of high temperatures”, meteorologist Bryan Jackson said.
“It is usually sunny, the sun is beating down, it is hot and the air is contained there,” Jackson said. “There are dozen or so sites that are setting daily records … mostly over Texas.” — Associated Press via MSN
