FIFA World Cup 2026 brings the beautiful game to the heart of Texas
The world is watching. And Texas is ready.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially kicked off, and Austin is making sure the celebration is as big as the tournament itself. Though no matches are being played within city limits, the Texas capital is leaning hard into the global football frenzy — and the energy downtown this week is undeniable.
Auditorium Shores: Where the Party Starts

At the center of it all is the Austin FC Soccer Celebration at Auditorium Shores.

Austin FC transformed downtown Austin’s most beloved green space along Lady Bird Lake into a free, premier fan destination for the four opening World Cup matches — including games featuring the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Fans gathered around a massive outdoor screen in a beer garden-style setup, complete with food and drink vendors and a high-energy, family-friendly atmosphere. Free admission (with registration) drew capacity crowds of up to 5,000 fans per day — and registrations filled up fast.
The event is a joint effort between Austin FC and When Where What Austin, kicking off a summer-long Austin Soccer Celebration that keeps the momentum rolling. Starting June 13, the party moves to Inn Cahoots in East Austin, where Austin FC’s “Casa Verde” hub will host free watch parties for every single match through the Final on July 19 — all 100 games of the tournament.
Big Economic Stakes for the City
While the actual matches are hosted just hours away in Dallas and Houston, Austin tourism leaders are eyeing a major opportunity. Visit Austin president Tom Noonan is bullish on the city’s ability to attract fans traveling between Texas host cities, noting that Austin is ideally positioned as a central hub between DFW, Houston, and even Monterrey, Mexico.
Across the state, projections estimate the World Cup could generate up to $3.5 billion in economic impact for Texas, with hotels, restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues all poised to benefit. Austin’s bars and restaurants are already capitalizing — venues like Aperí at Paggi House are rolling out themed food and drink specials to lure in World Cup crowds, and a wave of watch party venues stretches from downtown to North Lamar.
Austin may not have a stadium on the match schedule, but it has something harder to manufacture: atmosphere, culture, and a city that knows how to celebrate.
The world is here — and Austin showed up.

In an email to KXAN-TV on Thursday, Austin ISD officials disclosed that the district’s reserves have depleted to a critical threshold ahead of an upcoming budget adoption that will necessitate substantial spending cuts. The district’s fund balance is projected to close the fiscal year at approximately 10% of the total budget. This amount represents half of the board’s traditional requirement, though trustees did vote earlier this year to officially amend the 20% reserve target.

Following a stunning primary defeat that sent shockwaves through the Republican establishment, Senator John Cornyn broke his silence in an interview with The New York Times, addressing Donald Trump’s late-stage endorsement of Ken Paxton. While Cornyn downplayed rumors of a fractured relationship with the former president, his comments offer a rare, candid glimpse into the lingering tensions between Senate leadership and the Trump-aligned wing of the party ahead of a high-stakes November general election.

The decision heavily criticized the Republican AG, explicitly citing his “well-known history of filing retaliatory lawsuits” against political opponents. The 2026 FIFA World Cup officially kicked off yesterday with a historic opening day featuring the tournament’s co-hosts. For the first time in history, the tournament has expanded to 48 teams, meaning a completely restructured group stage format.

Because it was only Day 1 of the tournament, both Mexico (Group A) and Canada (Group B) have set the early pace in their respective groups. Under the 2026 format, securing points in the opening match is more critical than ever to guarantee a spot in the newly introduced Round of 32 knockout stage.
The action continues today as the United States makes its tournament debut alongside a full slate of group-stage matches.
