Xavier Isiah Gutierrez, 21, slipped out of the Hays County Jail on July 19 when he answered to another inmate’s name during a release call, according to authorities. It wasn’t until Wednesday — days later — that the Hays County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the escape and said Gutierrez had been located and recaptured near New Braunfels. Sheriff Anthony Hipolito called the lapse “unacceptable,” saying an internal investigation has been ordered to determine how the error occurred and what changes are needed to prevent it from happening again.
