Two Central Texas Shootings Under Investigation This Weekend
Central Texas authorities are actively investigating two separate shooting incidents that unfolded within hours of each other over the weekend.
In Austin’s Colony neighborhood, a 47-year-old Austin man was arrested and charged with murder after a fatal shooting in the early morning hours Saturday.
Travis County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to 911 calls at 3:29 a.m. in the 15100 block of Retha Pass, where they found a man in his 40s with gunshot wounds. The suspect, identified as Michael Scott Crawford, was detained at the scene minutes later. The victim has not yet been publicly identified, pending notification of next of kin. Investigators say the two men knew each other and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
About 30 miles south, San Marcos police responded Friday evening to an apartment complex in the 3000 block of State Highway 123 after reports that a man with active felony warrants was inside a unit.
The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Thomas Anthony Hawkins III, was escorted out of the apartment by his brother while holding a knife raised near his head. When Hawkins allegedly lunged at an officer, that officer fired, and two additional officers discharged their weapons after Hawkins fell but retained the knife.
Hawkins was transported to Ascension Seton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The two officers who fired have been placed on administrative leave, and the Texas Rangers are leading the investigation alongside San Marcos police detectives and the Hays County District Attorney’s Office.
Both cases remain under active investigation.

ICE activity was reported in the North Lamar neighborhood of Austin yesterday. One attempted detention led to a vehicle chase. It is still unknown if the arrest was made.
The group known for spearheading The Domain has partnered with Robinson Family Management to develop more than 1,200 acres in North Austin.
