Casar Crashes Cornyn’s Airport Photo-Op as Shutdown Squeezes Austin Travelers

What was supposed to be a feel-good moment for Sen. John Cornyn turned into an impromptu political skirmish on the curbside of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport Monday — one that captured, in a few minutes of shouting, the broader dysfunction gripping Washington and its real-world impact on Central Texas travelers.

Cornyn had organized a visit to the airport to deliver Whataburger to TSA agents who are working without pay during a partial government shutdown — a gesture framed as solidarity with federal workers caught in a congressional funding fight. But the senator’s plans were quickly upended.

Rep. Greg Casar arrived ahead of Cornyn and began speaking to reporters waiting for the senator, framing the scene before Cornyn ever stepped out of his vehicle. “The only acting award should go to Senator Cornyn, who has refused to fund TSA,” Casar told the assembled press. “Just last week, the Democrats in the Senate and the House offered a bill to fully fund TSA, and Senator Cornyn and the Republicans blocked it.”

When Cornyn arrived and the two men came face to face, things escalated quickly. “Why don’t you tell the Democrats to vote to pay these poor people,” Cornyn told Casar, referring to TSA employees who missed their first full paychecks due to the shutdown on Friday. Casar pressed Cornyn on whether he would support a bipartisan bill to fund just the TSA. “You don’t have to yell at me! Let’s talk for a second. There’s a bipartisan bill to fund just the TSA. The Shutdown Backdrop

The spat came a day after airlines wrote to lawmakers urging them to stop treating air travel like a “political football.” For the thousands of Austin passengers enduring long security queues during one of the airport’s busiest stretches of the year, the symbolism of two congressmen arguing on the curbside while workers went without pay was hard to miss.

Cornyn’s Runoff Problem

The airport confrontation arrives at a precarious moment for the four-term senator. Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton advanced to a May 26 Republican runoff after neither candidate crossed the 50 percent threshold in the March primary, with Cornyn edging Paxton by roughly one percentage point.

The senator enters the runoff facing headwinds. A recent poll shows Paxton leading Cornyn 45 percent to 42 percent among likely runoff voters, with 13 percent still undecided. Paxton draws stronger support from 2024 Trump voters, leading Cornyn 46 to 33 percent among that group. With runoff electorates typically skewing more conservative and more MAGA-aligned, Cornyn’s positioning on DHS — which Paxton allies will surely frame as insufficiently hardline — could be a liability.

Casar seemed to understand this dynamic. “The only reason he’s doing this extreme stuff, and making things up, and sprinting off, is because he’s trying to out-Ken Paxton,” Casar said after the exchange. It was a pointed observation: Cornyn’s insistence on full DHS funding — tying TSA pay to broader immigration enforcement spending — reflects the political reality that he cannot afford to appear soft on border issues against a challenger who has made MAGA loyalty his calling card.

Throughout the primary, Cornyn sought to position himself as a staunch Trump ally, with one recent TV ad describing him as “tough as nails on illegal immigration” and noting that he “votes with Trump 99% of the time.” But Paxton has continued hammering the senator as a creature of the “DC establishment,” and Monday’s scene — Cornyn walking away from a Democratic challenger who was demanding a bipartisan compromise — will likely be spun both ways, depending on the audience.

What Casar Gains

For Casar, chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, the confrontation was a calculated win. Casar faulted Republicans for the ongoing funding lapse despite voting against funding for the entire Department of Homeland Security — a position that gives Republicans their own attack line. But the optics of a progressive Austin Democrat forcing a senior Republican senator into a parking lot argument — and getting Cornyn to walk away on camera — plays well with a progressive base energized by the current political climate.
