Arch Manning’s Apology Sparks Its Own Controversy — And a Bigger Question About How We Treat Women in Sports Media

Texas quarterback Arch Manning didn’t expect a throwaway line at a press conference to become the biggest story of his week. But after Saturday’s dramatic 24-23 comeback win over Ohio State, that’s exactly what happened.

The backstory: after the game, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian cut short his postgame interview with ESPN’s Holly Rowe, sprinting off after a quick “Texas fight, Hook ’em.”

ESPN’s Laura Rutledge later clarified that Sarkisian had also skipped a halftime interview due to technical delays, but that the situation had been handled amicably on both sides.

Naturally, the internet did what the internet does — an AI-generated clip circulated showing a fabricated version of the exchange in which Sarkisian appears to shout at Rowe and slap her to the ground.

When a reporter asked Manning on Monday if he’d seen any viral fan edits from the game, he brought up the clip unprompted, laughing and calling it “hilarious.”

A man playfully slapping a woman's face during a sports interview on a field, with a crowd in the background.

The comment went viral, racking up more than 20 million views, and swift backlash followed. By Tuesday, Manning had posted an apology on Instagram, calling his remark “insensitive” and directly apologizing to Rowe for what she’d “personally had to deal with.” Rowe publicly accepted, saying the two had spoken privately and were moving forward “with respect and kindness.”

An Instagram story featuring a message of apology and appreciation addressed to Arch, discussing a past insensitive comment made by the author during a press conference about an AI video. The author expresses regret and acknowledges harm caused, specifically apologizing to Holly Rowe for her personal experiences related to the comment.

That should have been the end of it.

Instead, a second wave of reaction emerged — this time aimed at the apology itself.

A vocal contingent of fans and commentators argued Manning had done nothing wrong in the first place, framing the backlash as manufactured outrage and accusing critics of piling onto a 22-year-old for laughing at an obviously fake, satirical video.

Some outlets explicitly framed the criticism as an overreaction, arguing the real scandal was how quickly a joke about an AI meme could snowball into a national story, and pointing out the double standard of media outrage cycles that seem to spare male athletes accused of far more serious conduct.

Both reactions have merit worth sitting with.

The video was obviously fake, and treating every joke about a viral meme as a moral failing risks trivializing real accountability. But the discomfort many felt wasn’t really about whether Manning is a bad person — it was about a running theme in sports media: women reporters on the sideline are disproportionately the target of jokes, harassment, and depictions of violence that their male colleagues rarely face.

Holly Rowe, a longtime, respected sideline reporter, became collateral damage in a meme built around a coach’s minor breach of media etiquette — and that meme’s punchline was violence against her, specifically.

Whether or not Manning “needed” to apologize, the episode is a useful reminder that jokes about violence toward women in media rarely land as neutrally as intended, even when — maybe especially when — no one meant real harm.
