AN ABBREVIATED SPECIAL HOLIDAY EDITION

For over two centuries, the founding principles of individual freedom, representative government and the rule of law have served as the bedrock of American democracy. The Bill of Rights, ratified in 1791, explicitly protected fundamental freedoms such as speech, religion, press, assembly, and due process. Through various trials and expansions of these rights over the generations, Americans have generally enjoyed unprecedented levels of personal liberty, economic opportunity, and political participation compared to much of the world.

However, many Americans today express concern that these hard-won freedoms are facing new challenges. Some point to increasing government surveillance capabilities, expanded executive powers, and restrictions on speech in digital spaces as signs of erosion. Others worry about the polarization of political discourse, the influence of special interests on democratic processes, and the concentration of power in large institutions. Corporate censorship, cancel culture, and the weaponization of government agencies are frequently cited as threats to the open exchange of ideas that democracy requires.

The tension between security and liberty, order and freedom, has always existed in American society. What seems different today is the scale and speed at which these debates unfold, amplified by technology and social media. As we celebrate another Fourth of July, the challenge remains the same as it was for the founders: how to preserve the delicate balance between individual rights and collective governance, ensuring that the freedoms they fought to establish continue to flourish for future generations.

On Thursday, President Donald Trump, with the support of his Republican allies in Congress, finalized a second significant tax cut. This action further solidifies his administration’s substantial — and costly — economic impact, which is expected to exacerbate the nation’s financial imbalances for years.

The bill could lead to 1.6-1.7 million more uninsured Texans, potentially causing rural hospital closures due to reduced Medicaid funding.

Texas Republican Congressman Chip Roy initially called the bill “garbage” but supported it for its border security resources, tax relief, and “largest mandatory spending reduction in American history”.
