Every Saturday the Sustainable Food Center of Austin holds a farmers’ market downtown at Republic Square and other locations in the metropolitan area.

It wasn’t a bad experience at all but, to be honest, it was a bit underwhelming. There weren’t as many vendors open as I expected. Many of them dealt with high-end products like “grass-fed chicken” (?), organic beef, artisan baked goods, etc.

I would have liked to have seen more everyday produce, common baked goods, food trucks serving up meals and coffee.

And where was the live music you promised?

The only items purchased at the market were a few zucchinis and a super delicious lemon-orange fresh smashed citrus drink from CTRUS.

As we were leaving, a throng of walkers were making their way up Congress Avenue.

NAMI was holding their 5K walk for mental health awareness.

As we neared our neighborhood we encountered them again as they ended the walk at the Long Center, where it began.

As for the market, we’ll revisit it.

Maybe we were there too early. Maybe there will be more fruit and produce when autumn truly rolls around.

(The SFC Farmers’ Market is held every Saturday – rain or shine – from 9:00am to 1:00pm.)
