Many residents of Washington, D.C., and surrounding areas are still cleaning up and dealing with power outages after Saturday night’s storms.

Forecasters say a phenomenon known as downbursts is to blame. Common in summer storms, downbursts are blasts of wind originating in clouds that slam into the ground and fan out, producing gusts more severe than low-end tornadoes. More than 200,000 customers lost power.

On Sunday, about 15,000 customers remained without power in D.C. and Maryland. Utility officials expected all customers’ power to be restored by Tuesday at 3 p.m. (Washington Post)

The Baltimore Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance as they attempt to identify a child who may have been neglected. Late Saturday night, a report of a small child wandering outside on Fernhill Avenue near Garrison Boulevard led officers to the area where they found the child, who is nonverbal and around three or four years old, and took him to a hospital for an examination.

Authorities are looking for the child’s parents or anyone with information about his identity. Anyone with information regarding the child has been asked to contact Missing Persons detectives at the department by calling (443) 984-7385 or 911. (Anne Arundel Daily Voice)
