Jousting became the official state sport of Maryland in 1962–the first state to adopt an official state sport. It refers to the medieval competition of fighting on horseback using a lance.
I won’t be doing any of that here.
The more modern definition of jousting is simply “to compete, especially for power and control”.
And that, I feel, is what we’re all doing these days.
American democracy is on the chopping block. There is the growing movement inside the Republican party to deny and refuse to accept the results of the 2020 presidential election. Add to that the increasing number of policy changes that are less closely tied to the popular will, the ultra-right propaganda media platforms that flourish today, Trump, MAGA, the “Wal-Mart” electorate who don’t realize they’re being used and suddenly you have the makings of a move toward fascism.
It’s time to fight.
It’s time to stay vigilant and shout from the rooftops what’s going on in this country.
It’s time to joust.
