Holiday Magic Around Austin: Your Guide to Festive Events and Lights
As the holiday season arrives in Central Texas, the Austin area transforms into a spectacular wonderland of twinkling lights, festive performances, and cherished traditions. Whether you’re a longtime local or visiting for the season, there’s no shortage of magical experiences to create lasting memories with family and friends.
Trail of Lights Opens Tonight at Zilker Park

The season officially kicks off tonight as the beloved Austin Trail of Lights opens its gates at Zilker Park. Running through December 23, this 61st annual celebration features over 2 million lights adorning 96 illuminated trees across more than 70 festive displays. Visitors can stroll the 1.25-mile trail while enjoying the towering 155-foot Zilker Holiday Tree—one of Austin’s last standing Moonlight Towers wrapped in 3,309 lights and crowned with a 10-foot double star.

This year introduces two exciting new installations: the Neon Zoo by Ion Art and the Texas Tunnel, which celebrates the Lone Star State with a sunset-inspired light experience. Free admission is available on select weeknights, with premium options including early access and complimentary hot cocoa in the ZIP Lounge. Live local music, food trucks, and classic carnival rides complete the experience.
Peppermint Parkway at COTA

For those seeking a walk-through holiday adventure, Peppermint Parkway at Circuit of The Americas runs through December 28. This reimagined experience features millions of lights along a dazzling pathway, plus the new Circuit Breaker roller coaster, Santa meet-and-greets, go-karting, mini golf, and nightly tree lighting ceremonies at 6 PM. With tickets starting at $8 per person, it’s an affordable way to enjoy holiday festivities with thrilling entertainment options.
Longhorn Lights at UT Austin
The University of Texas campus glows with school spirit as Longhorn Lights illuminates the South Mall through January 1. Nine miles of burnt orange and white lights frame the iconic UT Tower, which is currently undergoing its first restoration since the 1930s. The synchronized display dances to holiday favorites and music by the Longhorn Band, offering free viewing nightly from 5 to 10 PM.
Ballet Austin’s The Nutcracker
Texas’s longest-running production of The Nutcracker returns to the Long Center for its 63rd season. Running through December 23, Ballet Austin’s beloved performance features live accompaniment by the Austin Symphony Orchestra, spectacular sets, and the tradition of surprise celebrity guests playing Mother Ginger. From Clara’s enchanting journey to the Land of Sweets to the dazzling Sugar Plum Fairy, this timeless classic creates cherished holiday memories for generations of families.
Georgetown Square’s Twinkling Tradition
Just 30 minutes north, Georgetown‘s historic downtown square dazzles with thousands of golden lights illuminating the Williamson County Courthouse and surrounding streets through January 1. The lights kicked off with the annual Lighting of the Square ceremony on November 28 and now shine nightly, creating perfect photo opportunities around the magnificent Christmas tree. The charming square also offers boutique shopping, local restaurants, and the Candyland Christmas Stroll marketplace.
Neighborhood Light Displays
Austin’s residential neighborhoods contribute their own festive flair. The quirky 37th Street Lights near UT campus features creative DIY displays, including the famous Stuffed Animal Petting Zoo and interactive art installations. Starting this Friday, this volunteer-run tradition captures Austin’s eccentric spirit with offbeat decorations best experienced on foot.
In Pemberton Heights, over 50 homes along Windsor Road and Stanford Drive coordinate synchronized light shows set to music. Cedar Park‘s Rhodes Family Christmas and Heritage Park displays have become local legends, while Leander neighborhoods like Huggins Holidays and Chalk Knob Manor offer impressive synchronized shows supporting local food banks.
Making the Most of the Season
With free events alongside ticketed experiences, there’s something for every budget. Many attractions offer weekday specials and early-bird pricing, so planning ahead pays off. Whether you’re ice skating under twinkling lights, attending a classical ballet, or simply driving through decorated neighborhoods, the Austin area offers countless ways to celebrate the season.
The holiday spirit is alive and glowing throughout Central Texas. Bundle up, grab some hot cocoa, and experience the magic that makes this season truly special in the Live Music Capital of the World.
