Austin’s Battle Over Barton Springs Bridge

As the century-old span marks its 100th anniversary, a preservation fight is heating up.

Standing at the entrance to Zilker Park, the Barton Springs Bridge is more than just a way to cross Barton Creek — it is a living piece of Austin’s architectural and cultural identity. Now, as the city moves forward with plans to replace it, community members and advocacy groups are drawing a line in the sand.

A Bridge Born With the Park

Constructed in 1926 by Texas engineer Terrell Bartlett, the Barton Springs Bridge opened as a two-lane reinforced-concrete arch span, replacing a wooden structure that city officials had deemed unsafe. Its opening coincided with a pivotal moment for Zilker Park: that same year, the park expanded to 300 acres and construction of Barton Springs Pool began. The bridge cost $31,500 to build and quickly became the primary gateway to what would grow into one of Austin’s most cherished public spaces.

As Austin’s population surged after World War II, the bridge was widened to four lanes between 1945 and 1946 at a cost of $70,850. Today, roughly 20,000 cars cross it every day, along with cyclists and pedestrians. In 1997, it was recognized as a contributing feature to the Zilker Park National Register Historic District, cementing its cultural significance alongside the pool and park it has served for a century.

The Case for Replacement — and Resistance

In December 2023, the Austin City Council voted unanimously to advance plans to replace the bridge, citing concrete deterioration, cracked and missing sections, and non-compliance with ADA accessibility standards. In October 2024, the Federal Highway Administration awarded the project a $32 million grant, giving the replacement effort significant financial momentum.

But preservationists aren’t convinced demolition is the only answer.

Save Our Springs Alliance Executive Director Bill Bunch has called the city’s proposed replacement a “big ugly new highway bridge” that would double the current structure’s footprint and be out of scale with its historic surroundings. In late May 2026,

Preservation Texas added the bridge to its annual Most Endangered Places list, noting that TxDOT‘s own structural integrity ratings for the bridge have been satisfactory.

The Historic Landmark Commission also expressed frustration that it was not consulted earlier, given the bridge’s location within a nationally recognized historic district.

What Comes Next

The debate now centers on whether rehabilitation is a viable alternative to full replacement — a question currently under federal review. Preservation Austin, the Zilker Neighborhood Association, and the Save Our Springs Alliance are all active stakeholders in that process.

As Austin grows and its infrastructure ages, the Barton Springs Bridge has become a symbol of a broader tension: the need to modernize a rapidly expanding city while honoring the places that define it. Whatever decision ultimately comes, the fight over this century-old crossing makes clear that Austinites aren’t ready to let go of the soul of Zilker Park without a serious conversation first.
