Austin city officials held a Thursday morning press conference at City Hall to outline preparations for the upcoming weekend protests.
The briefing followed Monday’s anti-ICE demonstration, which concluded with the arrests of 13 individuals by Austin Police Department officers and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers.
Hands Off Central Texas has scheduled a protest on Saturday as part of a nationwide day of action.
“Austinites know how to peacefully protest. And I have faith and trust in our Austin Police and in Chief Lisa Davis … that she and the other officers will preserve the peace appropriately.” — Austin Mayor Kirk Watson
“We are prepared for protests this Saturday. You will see an increase in officers. Like the Mayor, I believe in Austin. I believe in our people.” — Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis
At Thursday’s news conference, Davis stated that officers no longer have bean bag munitions (like ones used by APD officers during unrest in 2020) but are equipped with pepper spray and tasers. She emphasized that law enforcement will employ targeted enforcement against agitators and violent offenders while ensuring peaceful protests can continue.
