A protest condemning recent ICE raids and nationwide immigration detentions, organized by the Party for Socialism and Liberation’s Austin branch, began at the State Capitol around 7:00 p.m. Monday evening as largely peaceful.

As that rally ended, protesters began marching down Congress Avenue.

And that’s where things got a bit out of hand.

An hour after the march’s start, protesters who neared a downtown federal building, dispersed after law enforcement fired tear gas canisters at them.

The situation escalated significantly once protesters reached the federal building area, with law enforcement using crowd control measures, including using pepper spray, that led to the dispersal of the demonstration and multiple arrests. The protest, which had been largely peaceful during the march from the Capitol, became more confrontational at the federal building location.

Eight arrests were made. Three APD officers suffered injuries from thrown rocks. One suffered a shoulder injury during an arrest and was spat upon.

Protests unfolded across Texas on Monday evening, with demonstrations in Dallas joining earlier gatherings on Sunday in San Antonio and Houston. These Texas protests drew inspiration from weekend anti-ICE demonstrations in Los Angeles, which erupted following a series of federal immigration raids and arrests that generated significant local opposition.
