Being a kid at heart, I love the candy holidays: Valentine’s Day, Easter, Christmas and the Willy Wonka of them all…Halloween.
I’m not necessarily into the costumes or parties, although one time I did do this…
Not going out tonight but one night last week you would have found me at Lefty’s Brick Bar on the eastern end of 6th Street. I read they had a cool pop-up bar for the Halloween season and it was worth the extra walk to check it out.
During the 2022 Halloween season (which seems to be extending with each passing year), Americans spent $1.3 billion on candy.
As a kid, trick-or-treating, there were definitely certain items you didn’t want dumped in your bag: hard grandma candies, fruit snacks, popcorn balls, homemade peanut brittle, wax lips, leftover candy canes from last Christmas, circus peanuts, etc.
And then there’s the infamous debate over candy corn. Many seem to either love it or hate it. I actually am okay with candy corn (the “Kandy Korn” label irks me, though). The divisive confection is even getting the New York Times treatment. And, no, it doesn’t kill 500,000 Americans a year.

Let’s face it. Most of us would be terrified to see this coming at us.
But living in the neighborhood of the Congress Avenue Bridge, I’m learning to let go of horror movie stereotypes and be fascinated by them. Although I still wouldn’t want one chasing me.
