Deadly Weekend Highlights Austin’s Ongoing Nightclub Violence Problem

Austin recorded three homicides in a matter of hours over the Fourth of July weekend, renewing concerns among local law enforcement about gun violence tied to the city’s nightlife scene.

The first shooting happened just before midnight Saturday outside Michelobos, a bar at 900 E. Braker Lane in northeast Austin.

According to police, an altercation escalated into gunfire, leaving one man dead and another injured. Michelobos sits in a strip mall that Austin police have previously flagged as a persistent crime hot spot, tied to a cluster of nightclubs and after-hours venues in the area.

Hours later, around 4 a.m. Sunday, deputies with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office responded to a second, deadlier shooting outside Bare Cabaret, an adult nightclub on Reservoir Court that operates as an after-hours spot from midnight to 6 a.m. on weekends.

Officials say a fight in the crowded parking lot turned into gunfire, and deputies arrived to find roughly 400 people on scene. A man in his 20s died at the location, and a woman believed to be in her late teens or early twenties died later at a hospital. As of Sunday, no arrests had been made, though one person was briefly detained and released.

Together, the two incidents marked Austin’s 32nd through 34th homicides of 2026, according to authorities. The clustering of shootings around nightlife venues echoes a pattern local police have flagged before: crowded, late-night establishments with limited oversight creating conditions where arguments can turn lethal in a matter of seconds. For law enforcement, the challenge isn’t just solving each case — it’s addressing the venues and hours that keep producing them.

This was Bare Caberet’s second fatal incident in recent years.

On September 3, 2020, around 4 a.m., a fight broke out at Bare Cabaret. A Houston man, later identified as 24-year-old Lawrence Demarcus Jones, was involved in the altercation and suffered critical injuries. Notably, neither police nor EMS were called at the time — the Sheriff’s Office only learned of the incident days later, on a Friday, after Jones’s father contacted them to say his son had been hospitalized in critical condition. Jones was pronounced dead that same day.

Investigations into Sunday’s shootings remain active. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Austin Police Department‘s homicide tip line at 512-477-3588 or Capital Area Crime Stoppers at 512-472-8477.

A man and a woman are dead in southwest Bexar County after an adult child discovered her parents’ bodies Saturday night in what authorities are investigating as a suspected domestic violence murder-suicide.

The sheriff believes Friday night’s incident — BCSO’s fifth domestic violence-related homicide investigation out of 10 homicides so far this year — is the continuation of a disturbing trend in Bexar County.

Last year, BCSO said nine of the 15 homicides the sheriff’s office investigated were related to domestic violence. (KSAT-TV)
